Our Shopify Journey: From Store Development to Building Our First Shopify App

Our Shopify Journey: From Store Development to Building Our First Shopify App

Our Shopify journey didn’t start with an app.

It started with building stores.

Over the years, we worked with businesses on Shopify store development, theme customization, migrations, integrations, performance improvements, and ongoing support. Working on different stores gave our team a practical understanding of what merchants need beyond the basic store setup.

That experience eventually led us to a new question:

What if we could build our own Shopify solution?

And that’s where our journey from Shopify development to app development began.

Starting With Shopify Store Development

When we started working with Shopify, our focus was primarily on helping businesses build and improve their stores.

Every project brought different requirements. Some businesses needed a custom storefront, while others needed help with migration, integrations, or improving an existing Shopify store.

Working directly on these projects helped us understand Shopify from a merchant’s perspective.

We saw how small improvements could affect the shopping experience and how certain features could help merchants manage their stores more effectively.

This hands-on experience became the foundation for our next step.

The Idea Behind Our First Shopify App

While working with ecommerce stores, we noticed one simple customer behavior: people don’t always buy when they first discover a product.

They may like a product but want to wait for a sale, compare options, or simply come back later.

That’s where the idea of a better wishlist experience came in.

We wanted to create something that didn’t stop at saving a product. It could also help merchants reconnect with customers when there was a reason to return.

This became the starting point for our first Shopify app.

Building eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts

We developed eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts to combine wishlist functionality with useful shopper alerts.

The app allows customers to save products and receive relevant notifications such as:

  • Price-drop alerts
  • Back-in-stock alerts
  • Low-stock alerts
  • Wishlist reminders
  • Product sharing

For merchants, the app also provides customer and wishlist insights through its analytics features.

The idea was to keep the experience simple for both sides: easy for shoppers to save products and useful for merchants looking to understand product interest.

What Changed When We Started Building an App?

Building a Shopify store and building a Shopify app are two very different experiences.

With a store project, the solution is created around one business.

With an app, the product needs to work for many different Shopify merchants, stores, themes, and requirements.

That meant we had to think more carefully about:

  • Ease of installation
  • Merchant configuration
  • Store compatibility
  • Customer experience
  • Performance
  • Customization
  • Ongoing improvements and support

It was a new challenge for our team and an opportunity to apply what we had learned from years of Shopify work in a different way.

Our First Shopify App Store Launch

After development, testing, and refinement, eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts officially launched on the Shopify App Store on August 27, 2026.

For us, the launch marked more than the release of a new product.

It was our first step from being a Shopify development team to becoming a Shopify app creator.

Now, instead of building only for individual projects, we could create a solution that Shopify merchants could discover and use directly through the Shopify App Store.

What We've Learned So Far

Our first app has already added a new perspective to our Shopify work.

We’ve learned that building a product requires continuous attention after launch. Merchant feedback, usability, performance, and new requirements all become part of the development process.

Most importantly, our store development experience gave us a strong starting point, while app development is teaching us to think about Shopify solutions on a much broader scale.

What's Next?

Launching our first Shopify app is the beginning of another chapter for us.

We’ll continue working on Shopify stores while improving eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts and exploring more ideas for the Shopify ecosystem.

From developing stores to building our own app, the journey has evolved one project at a time.

And this is only the beginning of our Shopify app journey.

eWebWorld’s first Shopify app is eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts, a wishlist solution that helps shoppers save products and receive alerts such as price-drop, back-in-stock, and low-stock notifications.

eWeb – Wishlist & Alerts was launched on the Shopify App Store on August 27, 2026.

The idea came from observing that customers often like a product without being ready to purchase immediately. A wishlist gives shoppers a way to save those products and return to them later.

The app combines wishlist functionality with features such as price-drop alerts, back-in-stock alerts, low-stock alerts, wishlist reminders, product sharing, and analytics.

A store is usually developed around the requirements of one business, while an app needs to work across different Shopify stores and merchant requirements. This makes usability, compatibility, configuration, and ongoing improvements important parts of app development.
